Under the Ministry of Shipping (MoS) flagship programme, Sagarmala, Centre for Inland and Coastal Maritime Technology (CICMT) is being set up at IIT Kharagpur campus. As per the officials, this initiative will result in the cost and time saving for the work in the Maritime sector. Moreover, CMICT will help in applied research and development for the inland and coastal waterways sector.
IIT Kharagpu’s CICMT will give technological support, research, testing and experimentation facility to agencies involved in inland water transport, shipbuilding, ports. Etc. By this CMICT will provide solutions for inland and coastal waterways transportation. Moreover, it will provide tools and technological inputs to double the share in intermodal transport for domestic waterways freight carrying capacity.
Apart from this CMICT will help India to reduce dependence on foreign institutions as it will become the hub for the latest technology tools for the maritime sector.
This project is completely funded under unique and innovative projects Sagarmala. As per the officials,the cost of the project is Rs. 69.20 cr. The investment made on in the project is for 5 years. Later on, revenue generated will be help project to sustain.
