A festival aiming to honour teachers

Traditionally celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, Guru Purnima aims at honouring teachers, who have devoted themselves to enlighten others with little or no monetary expectations. Buddhists celebrate this festival in honour of Lord Buddha, who gave his first sermon on this day in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh.

In the yogic tradition, Guru Purnima is remembered as the occasion when Lord Shiva became the first Guru, as he started the transmission of yoga to the Saptarishis. This day is celebrated by most Hindus for honouring the great sage Vyasa, who is one of the greatest gurus in ancient Hindu customs.

Along with India and Nepal, the festival is celebrated in other countries as well. On this day, devotees worship their spiritual gurus and offer them gifts. They visit temples to seek their blessings. Fast is observed on this day by most people for paying respect to their guru. They sustain on mostly fresh fruits and curd. Pujas are held by them to offer gratitude and pray for everyone’s goodness. Prayers are recited by the students in honour of their gurus in ashrams and monasteries.
