Exams postponed or cancelled?

With SC verdict on the CBSE board exams today, millions of students are likely to get a relief from the dilemma of whether the exam will be conducted or not. The Supreme Court’s (SC) decision on CBSE exams 2020 will also pave the way for other exams like JEE Main 2020 and NEET 2020 to be postponed or not.

The final decision of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE/ICSE Board) are expected to be announced today for the remaining board exams.  In addition to that, JEE Main 2020, CTET, NEET and University Exams for final year students are also scheduled to be conducted in July.

CBSE, ICSE Board Exams 2020

The two national boards scheduled the remaining board exams for class 10th and 12th from July 1 to 15. After a PIL in the Supreme Court against CBSE and in Bombay High Court against ICSE exams, the decision to conduct the exams is pending. Earlier this week, the CBSE requested the Supreme Court for more time and to share its final decision by today i.e. June 25.

Maharashtra Government has already denied ICSE to conduct remaining board exams in the state.  Bombay HC has given time till June 29 to the board for sharing its final decision. ICSE Board informed the Bombay HC that after the final decision of CBSE, it would share its marking criteria in case students are to ‘opt out’ of the exams.

JEE Main, NEET Exams 2020

JEE Main and NEET 2020 are also scheduled to be conducted in July but there are chances that these exams may also get postponed. The combined registrations for the two exams to be conducted in July is over 2 million. NTA has not released any official notification to postpone the exams but the HRD minister’s meeting with the heads of all boards and officials from Home Ministry and Health Ministry has sparked a hope that these JEE Main and NEET 2020 also get postponed. If JEE Main is postponed, JEE Advanced would be postponed too.

Final Year University Exams

As per UGC exam guidelines, many universities conduct their final year exams in July. However, with the COVID-19 cases on the rise, HRD Minister advised UGC to re-think the exam guidelines. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed a panel in this regard. It is expected that the final year examinations would be cancelled as well. Moreover, the new academic session may start from October instead of September.

Central Teacher Eligibility Test

CTET, another exam conducted by the CBSE, is also scheduled for July 5. However, the board has yet to release the admit cards for the exam and there is also no decision for CTET to postpone. The notice about conducting the exam is also expected to be released by the CBSE this week.
