HRD Ministry Directs states and UTs to reduce weight of school bags

NEW DELHI : Ministry of Human Resources Development  has issued a directive to all the states and Union territories to devise guidelines with regard to the weight of the school bags of students and regulation of teaching of subjects. In wake of the orders that have been issued, Lakshwadeep Administration has directed the department of education to follow the guidelines.

Details of the circular

  • There is a no homework policy for Classes I to II
  • Educational Institutions have been directed to prescribe merely mathematics and languages for Classes I and II
  • The circular says that EVS, language and mathematics that has to be taught for classes III to V should be in accordance with NCERT guidelines.

Weight of the School Bags

  • The weight of the school bags for students who are studying in class I and II should not be more than 1.5 kilogram
  • The weight of school bags for students who are studying in class III, IV and V should be somewhere between two to three kilogram
  • The weight of school bags  for students of class VI, and VII should be four kilogram
  • The weight of school bags for students VIII and IX should be 4.5 kilogram
  • The weight of school bags for students of class X should be 5 kilogram
