In a move to give boost to research in the field of social sciences, Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) took the decision to spend Rs 200 crore on it. The ministry has launched a scheme ‘Impactful Policy Research in Social Science’ (IMPRESS) under which the at least 1500 projects will receive funding on the basis of merit. It is likely that each project will get Rs 20-25 lakh.
The Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) has been given the responsibility to execute and monitor the scheme. According to reports in the media, the requisite fund would be released in four phases. The first phase for the release of the fund will probably be finalised by January 2019.
Speaking to the media persons about the IMPRESS, MHRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar stated that though technology is important, society cannot move forward if progress is not made in the field of social sciences.
Topics for Research
Some of the topics in which research will be undertaken and for which funds will be allocated are:
- Culture and Society
- State and Democracy
- Urban Transformation
- Law and Economics
The aim of the scheme is to identify the appropriate research proposals and ensure that they have maximum impact on society as well as governance. A committee of experts will evaluate the proposals before finally giving them approval.
